This ghazal by Jagat Mohan Lal Ravan is an extremely captivating and thought-provoking portrait of the struggle between destiny and effort, human emotions, and the subtleties of love.
Interpretation and Understanding of the Verses
• When destiny became the helper of effort / A glance at the dust turned it into an elixir. In this verse, the poet says that when a person's effort is joined by their destiny, even the impossible becomes possible. In such a fortunate time, if one even looks at dust, it turns into gold or an elixir.
• The heart is ready to die for wine, the tongue repents of it / In this struggle, the soul was punished. Here, the conflict of human psychology is described. The heart is ready to sacrifice its life for love and intoxication, but the tongue, due to worldly compromise or intellect, repents of it. In this war between the heart and the mind, the actual punishment is suffered by the poor soul.
• The splatters of blood that remained on the killer's hem / On the Day of Judgment, became the commentary of my heart. On the Day of Resurrection, when the case of the lover's murder was presented, there was no need for him to speak. The few splatters of blood on the hem of the killer (the beloved) explained the whole story of the lover's true heart and deep love.
• Either kill me or forgive me / Whatever mistake was to happen, Your Highness, has happened. The lover, completely bowing his head in submission before his beloved, says that whatever sin or mistake was to happen from me has happened. Now it is entirely your choice whether to kill me for this crime or to forgive me.
• Dew-laden flowers drew my portrait / The withered bud became my picture. The poet, comparing his sorrowful state with nature, says that the dew on the flowers actually reflects my tears, and a withered bud presents a perfect picture of my sad and broken self.
• Where should the prisoners of the tresses of existence go / A single lock of hair became a chain for everyone's feet. This verse has a philosophical color. The attraction of the world and the entanglements of life have made prisoners of all human beings. We are all captives of this worldly lock of hair which has become a shackle for our feet; now there is no escape from this prison of life.
• I was about to tell the Judge of Judgment the state of my heart / A kohl-rimmed glance seized my throat. In the field of Resurrection, when I was just about to complain to God (the Judge of Judgment) about the cruelty of my beloved, the beloved cast such an intoxicating and deep glance at me that my voice choked in my throat and I could not open my lips.
• The traveler of action just stopped, saying "O Destiny" / At the very place where the destination of effort ended. A person's hard work and effort only accompany them to a certain limit. Where the limit of human intellect and effort ends, there a person becomes helpless, leaves everything to destiny, and stops.
• The patient of separation has just breathed his last / You did arrive, Your Highness, but you were too late. The lover, pining in separation from the beloved, has finally died. The beloved did come to visit him, but their arrival was so delayed that the lover's life had already departed.
• When we gained control over our own self, Ravan / The commentary on the secret of the world became easy. In the final couplet, Ravan says that when a person achieves self-realization and gains control over their own self, it becomes absolutely easy for them to understand all the hidden secrets of this universe and the world.
