1. The World's Labyrinth and the Call of the Lord
"I was lost in the paths of the world, yet still your memory called out to me..."
Here the servant is confessing his failings—that I strayed into the paths of worldly love, wealth, and desires. I was that traveler who had forgotten his true destination. But Allah's mercy is so vast that He did not abandon me; rather, He guided me.
A beautiful truth is conveyed here: the "pain" encountered in life and the "tears" that flow from our eyes were not punishment at all, but rather Allah's light and His call, so that the servant might return to his Lord.
2. The Discovery of True Love and Transformation
"Then one day your love found me, now in every breath there is your remembrance..."
When Allah's grace descends and a person receives guidance, their entire life transforms completely. Then in every breath and heartbeat dwells only the remembrance and love of their Creator. The servant abandons worldly love and dedicates their heart solely to Allah's love. They cry out: "O Master! Make me yours."
3. Ecstasy, Intoxication, and Spiritual State
"When your memory comes, the world is forgotten... Your love is that intoxication that never fades..."
Here is mention of the mystical state, "ecstasy." When a person attains true love of Allah, they become oblivious to worldly consciousness. They exist in a spiritual intoxication that never ends. Their weeping, singing, living—indeed, every action becomes solely for Allah's pleasure and remembrance.
4. The Journey from Darkness to Light
"I was that broken one, you mended me... I was that darkness, you illuminated me..."
A person becomes shattered from sin and worldly sorrows, and darkness falls upon their soul. The qawwal is here confessing: O my Master! You healed my broken heart by mending it, and you illuminated the darkness within me with your light. Now there is peace in my nights and hope in my mornings.
5. Annihilation in Allah (Effacing Oneself)
"Dye me in your color... Burn me in your love..."
At the qawwali's conclusion, the servant prays to his Lord: O Allah! Dye me in your color (in the color of Allah). That is, let there remain no will of my own, no desire of mine—let only that remain which is your pleasure. "Burn me in your love" means that my arrogance, my pride, and my 'self' should be consumed, and I should become entirely yours.
