In this ghazal, Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi speaks of determination and courage—that no matter how dark the circumstances, a true human being creates his own path through courage and sacrifice. The Simple and Beautiful Meaning of the Verses Verse 1: In this dark night, we shall show you a miracle, If we cannot light a lamp, then we shall set our hearts ablaze. Meaning: If circumstances are not favorable, if darkness surrounds us from all sides (despair) and no external light of hope remains, we shall not surrender. We shall sacrifice ourselves—our very lives and hearts—and create the radiance of determination and courage, defeating the darkness. Verse 2: Our mountain-breaking has different standards, We shall carve out new paths by cutting through mountains. Meaning: (Mountain-breaking = mining mountains, as Farhad once carved a mountain for Shirin). The poet says that our way of fighting hardship is not conventional but unique. We shall not become slaves to old traditions, but rather by our determination, we shall cut through even the greatest difficulty (mountains) and create entirely new paths of progress and success. Verse 3: Criticism has no place in the madness of love, Why would we pluck the flowers and scatter the butterflies? Meaning: It is not our nature to criticize true love, passion, and emotion. We are not so heartless as to destroy beauty. We cannot commit such cruel acts as uprooting flowers and leaving butterflies homeless; we are those who protect beauty and passion. Verse 4: Very tired we are, so for a moment or two we shall rest, If our garment gets tangled somewhere, why would we tear ourselves away? Meaning: In life's journey and struggle, fatigue is natural. If we grow weary and rest for a moment, and if life's charms or love allure us (our garment becomes entangled), we shall not flee from this beautiful feeling, but rather honor it. Verse 5: If there is some charm in death, then only this much, That after it we shall find the trace of God. Meaning: The fear of death cannot overpower us. If death has any charm or beauty, it is only this—that it lifts the veil of the material world, and a human being attains knowledge and understanding of their true Creator. This is a beautiful verse in the mystical tradition. Verse 6 (The Closing Couplet): Even the grave cannot leave Nadeem alone, For from all sides we shall find the earth close to us. Meaning: Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi says that even after death, the solitude of the grave cannot isolate us, because once we merge with the soil, we become part of every atom of this universe. The earth will embrace us, and thus we shall find ourselves in the embrace of the cosmos.
