The Central Idea and Introduction of the Ghazal Reimagine & composed by Muhammad Farooq
This ghazal is an extraordinarily beautiful and sorrowful elegy on the impermanence of human life, the tyranny of circumstances, loneliness, and the consequences of deeds. Its central message is this: time and circumstances (referred to as "wind" in the ghazal) are not one's own. Today's glory may face ruin tomorrow. Therefore, one should neither be arrogant about one's power nor rejoice in others' misery or destruction.
📖 Detailed Interpretation of the Verses (Meaning)
Whom shall I complain to, no fault is anyone's, it was my own forgetfulness, no one is unfaithful. Interpretation: The poet says, what grievance shall I lodge against anyone for the sorrows and betrayals received in life? In truth, it is no one else's fault, but rather my own naivety and forgetfulness—that I harbored hopes of loyalty from worldly people, when the reality is that this world is faithful to no one.
It is the burden of our own mistakes, O companion, without sin there is no punishment for anyone. Interpretation: This verse speaks of the consequences of deeds. Whatever we suffer in life is somehow the result of our own decisions and actions. Nature's system is founded on perfect justice; here no one receives the punishment of suffering without reason or without fault.
The wounds are filled, yet they never heal; what strange pain this is, which no one has the cure for. Interpretation: Physical wounds of man may heal with time, but the blows that strike the soul and heart never fully recover. This is such a unique and profound pain that no physician or savior in this world possesses its remedy.
The seasons keep changing here; the reign will endure in the world, yet no one's cruelty is eternal. Interpretation: This verse is a warning for the powerful and tyrannical people of the world. The poet says that the seasons of power and might constantly change in this world. He who has dominion today will turn to dust tomorrow. In this world, no tyrant's cruelty can remain forever.
We kept calling throughout the entire night, but here except for our own voice, no answer came from anyone. Interpretation: This verse speaks of profound loneliness and helplessness. In the dark night of difficult times, we kept crying out for help in pain and suffering, but silence reigned throughout the universe. No comforting voice came in response except the echo of our own cry.
Before destiny one cannot prevail; what good is any prayer against fate? Interpretation: Death and destiny are such immutable truths that no one can avert them. When God's command comes and fate's decree is issued, then no human effort or prayer avails. Man is utterly helpless before the decisions of nature.
Do not be so arrogant of life's spring, O my companion in the garden; nothing lasts forever. Interpretation: O friend! Why be so proud of this fleeting spring of life, youth and comfort? This world is like a garden where autumn must surely come. Here, from flowers to humans, nothing possesses eternity.
All sustenance belongs to God alone; all giving is His alone, no one else can give. Interpretation: People harbor the delusion that they are sustaining others or giving them something, but in truth, the sole sustainer of every atom in the universe is God alone. Whatever we receive is purely the gift of that Lord; no other human possesses the power to give anything to anyone.
The helmsman knew not that the very wind upon which his boat sailed became a storm and drowned his vessel. The wind is faithful to no one. Interpretation: The boat's captain did not know that the very wind that was carrying him on his journey transformed into a tempest and sank his vessel. And the greatest tragedy is that the wind does not weep or lament after drowning the boat, because nature is merciless and this wind is no one's friend or sympathizer.
If today I am under its blow, do not rejoice; all lamps will be extinguished, the wind is faithful to no one. Interpretation: This is the most famous and powerful verse of the ghazal, expressing a universal truth. The poet says that if today the storm of time and circumstance is against me, do not be pleased at my ruin. Remember! When this fierce wind of circumstances changes its course, one day it will also extinguish the lamp of your pride and existence, because this wind is faithful to no one!
