The Central Idea of the Ghazal (Theme) - Written by Mubarik Siddiqi This ghazal is about that power of love which transforms a person's entire life. The poet believes that true love descends upon a person like a miracle, where even the season of autumn turns into spring and life becomes fragrant with perfumes. The Simple Meaning of the Couplets Couplet Number 1: I was like a stone, lifeless and worthless, but when he came to me, it had to be—I found the alchemy, now the miracle was inevitable. • Meaning: The poet says that I was like an ordinary stone, inanimate and worthless, but from the moment my beloved entered my life, a miraculous transformation occurred within me. 'Alchemy' is that substance which turns iron or stone into gold. That is, my beloved's love made an ordinary person like me into something precious, and this miracle was bound to happen. Couplet Number 2: I had lit lamps of fragrance along his path—so my connection with that flower-bodied beloved was destined to be. • Meaning: 'Flower-bodied' means one with a tender and beautiful form like a flower. The poet says that I had lit lamps of love, sincerity and affection along the path of my beloved. When there was such true and beautiful effort from my side, then my bond and connection with this beautiful person was bound to happen. Couplet Number 3: The word had begun to spread of fragrance, light and flowers—now my beloved had to be remembered in my words. • Meaning: Whenever the world speaks of beauty, delicacy, fragrance and light, my beloved's mention will come forth naturally. Because the beloved is himself the symbol of beauty, fragrance and light. So when these things came up in conversation, my beloved's mention in my speech was inevitable. Couplet Number 4: He sat before me, washed clean by roses—my eyes had to bloom with freshness and my heart had to become a prayer. • Meaning: When my beloved, pure and beautiful as a rose, sat before me face to face, my eyes gained a sparkle and freshness upon seeing him, and my heart was filled with gratitude and the emotion of prayer. Upon witnessing such a beautiful sight, this state of heart and eyes was natural. Couplet Number 5: O season of autumn, do not look at me with such wonder—he had looked at me with love, so I had to turn green again. • Meaning: This is the most beautiful couplet of the ghazal. The poet addresses the autumn season saying, O autumn! Do not look at me in wonder at how I bloomed instead of withering. The matter is simply this: my beloved looked upon me with the gaze of love, and by the blessing of that single glance, a wilted soul like me had to become green and vibrant again. Couplet Number 6: He was a good man, so accusations fell upon him—in this city of calamities, this disaster was bound to happen. • Meaning: Such is the way of the world: here, it is often the good and sincere people who bear accusations. The poet says that he was a very devoted and good person, and for this very reason the people of the world made him their target. In this heartless world (city of calamities), such a terrible disaster befalling a good person is nothing new.
