A Ghazal with Commentary
The central idea of this ghazal is that radiance of the beloved's beauty which outshines everything in the universe, and it is presented in a humorous and delightful manner.
The verses and their explanations
1. Whenever a mirror has been brought before her
Its very existence trembles in danger at her presence
Explanation: In this verse the poet says that the beloved's beauty is so incomparable that when a mirror comes before her, it begins to doubt its own reality. The mirror is troubled, thinking: the true beauty stands before me—what worth do I possess?
2. Once only I alone was afflicted by love's wound
Now it seems the whole world's happiness is in peril
Explanation: The poet says that once only I was captive to his love, but now seeing her grace it appears the entire world will become devoted to her, so everyone's peace and joy have been placed at stake.
3. If she smiles in the gathering with innocent naiveté
Then know that every serious soul's dignity is endangered
Explanation: Here the beloved's innocent smile is mentioned. If she but smiles a little in the gathering, even the most dignified and solemn people lose their composure and their honor falls into jeopardy.
4. She cast but one glance, merely turning her eyes
Since then everyone says the city of hearts is in danger
Explanation: One fleeting glance from the beloved is enough to steal a heart. Her slightest glimpse has stirred turmoil in the hearts of the entire city, and now everyone worries about protecting their own heart.
5. A rivalry of color and fragrance has begun in garden and field
The flowers fear that their very life is endangered
Explanation: This is a beautiful metaphor. Before the beloved's fragrance and beauty, the flowers feel their significance diminishing. They fear that now people will abandon them and turn toward the beloved instead.
